The crown is also called a ‘cap’ and is a customized porcelain covering that goes over your remaining natural tooth to give it a brand new life.
When a tooth is severely damaged and there is not enough of the natural tooth remaining to support a filling, a crown is needed to cover the tooth to restore the tooth’s strength and function. If much of the natural tooth is missing, a buildup may also be needed to add back enough structure to hold a crown.
The crown is made with zirconia and/or porcelain and painstakingly crafted by local dental artists to custom fit the individual teeth. Once placed in the mouth, it will look and feel natural and is hard to distinguish from surrounding teeth.
The crown appointment is typically 70 to 90 minutes long. Dr. Lee will anesthetize the area so that you are comfortable during the procedure.
Much of the time is spent on shaping, measuring and taking impressions of the tooth. Any removal of the tooth structure is so that the final crown restores the tooth to its original shape and size.
Dr. Lee will place a temporary crown made of hard resin material which mimics the shape and function of the normal tooth. The temporary crown will protect the tooth until the permanent crown is placed.
A second visit takes place after about 2-3 weeks. The appointment usually last about 10 minutes. No anesthesia is needed at this visit. The temporary is removed and the permanent crown is carefully positioned to confirm the fit and the esthetics. Dr. Lee will then bond the crown using a special adhesive.
Some soreness of the gums may be present when the anesthesia has worn off and take precautions while you are still numb to avoid accidentally hurting yourself.
Both the temporary crown and the permanent crown can be used as regular tooth. Take same care of them as your other teeth with good hygiene.
Call Dr. Lee with any problems or questions.
